Friends, Fat-loss and Who’s Holding You Back

If you are looking to make a healthier change in your life, think about who you spend the most time with.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a circle of trustworthy friends that leave you feeling great about yourself and you look forward to seeing; research shows you are far more likely to succeed.

Jim Rohn stated “we are the amalgamation of the five people we spend the most time with.” Who are yours? How do they make you feel?

These people not only affect our moods, but our decisions and behaviours. I truly believe people can be categorized into two types: drains and radiators. Radiators radiate positivity, drawing you towards them. Drains drain you, making you want to run away! How we respond to either’s behaviour is down to us:

True friends will support your goals.

I have previously had ‘friends’ and worked with people that have wanted me to succeed – but only on THEIR terms, i.e. as long as I wasn’t more successful than them. Or to be slim (but not as slim as them.) Does this sound familiar?!

When you are trying to change something, this should not affect the equilibrium of your friendship. If it does, ask yourself what kind of friend they are.

It is important to remember insecure people take out their insecurities on the people around them; bringing them down in order to make themselves feel better, rather than taking a good look at themselves. True friends will support you unconditionally, not encourage you to stray off your paths or make you feel guilty.

Find like-minded people

Positive reinforcement, rather than competition is essential when working towards something. You will attract whatever you project. If you constantly rant on Facebook about how terrible life is, how will this make you look and who wants to read that?!

Instead, look at different Facebook groups for like-minded people to share tips and recipes. Blogs full of positive advice are also great to follow (you’re reading one right now!!)

Interact with others already there

This is how new friendships are formed! We are fortunate enough to have created a friendly non-competitive environment at our Boot camp class. A newcomer told me last week everyone chatted to her immediately and she felt very welcome, rather than the ‘new girl’.

True friends will stay true friends regardless of your size and fitness. They are friends with you for the PERSON you are!

As a recap, my top tips for not falling off the New Years Resolution wagon are:

– surround yourself with positive people: we are the amalgamation of the five people we spend the most time with. Make sure yours are radiators and not drains.

– be patient: take things one step at a time, one day at a time, one meal at a time. Results that are permanent are achieved over time, not instantaneously.

– be kind to yourself: focus on what you CAN do, not what you can’t do. And think about what you HAVE rather than what you want. Often this is all it takes to bring us back to the present moment and feel grateful. And when we have gratitude on our mind, it’s impossible to feel anything other than peace.

And finally: becoming buddies with Miles Henson clearly has advantages as I even managed to get Jason Donovan on the air! Thanks Miles once again for having me, and sacrificing your credibility in the process! 😉

Fit in five minutes whatever the weather!

Do not underestimate the power of fresh air!

Regardless of how miserable the weather may be, or even if we are blessed with a few moments of Southampton sunshine, the majority of the population spend their days cooped up indoors.

With so many of us up and out before sunrise, and home after it has set, is it any wonder stress levels, work-related absence and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the winter months are at their highest?

The solution?  GET OUTSIDE!

This post is by no means suggesting you risk yours or anyone else’s safety in the treacherous weather conditions we’ve had in Southampton and the majority of the country lately, but merely think how it can be used to your advantage.

Here are my top 3 ideas that my Personal Training clients have found work best for them:

Walk/Run for Function

It may sound cliché (or you’ve heard it before) but grabbing a brolly, getting out the office and briskly walking around the block even for 10-20 minutes can make even the baddest of days better.

Your mind will clear and re-focus from physically removing yourself from the environment, your mood lifted from the natural daylight and oxygen.

15 minute fat blast: Warm up by walking briskly for two minutes. Repeat the following x 4: 2 minute jog and 30 second sprint. Walk slowly to cool down, finishing with stretching.

Head for the Hills

Hill walks/sprints are a great interval training workout for the heart and lungs, allowing Get your family involved, exercising in Southamptonexertion and recovery at your own pace. Try your local park, woods or venture further, making a day of it at the beach or a national park. Vary the terrain: grass, gravel and sand all keep it interesting.

10 minute fat blast: run uphill (or up outdoor steps,) walk down and repeat. Record how many you do – and see if you can beat it next time to track your progress. Great fun for all the family so make a game of it!

DIY Boot Camp

As our Boot camp takes place outdoors and undercover, our attendees are fortunately always guaranteed fresh air whatever the weather!

Try making your own in your garden or local playground. Simple exercises like press ups and step-ups can be done on benches. Pull ups and mountain climbers can be done on climbing frame ladders.

Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited on to 93.7 Express FM’s Business Show, by the lovely Miles Henson, who wanted to know all about my philosophy and profession as a Personal Trainer.

I couldn’t believe how quick the hour went! We had a lovely chat about how I got started, why I do what I do, what actually happens at our Faster Southampton Bootcamp (I think it definitely sounds a lot scarier than it is!) and the kind of people I am so fortunate enough to train.
